EditStock Statement on Diversity

EditStock cherishes the diversity of mankind and seeks projects for our content library from as wide a variety of voices as possible; in terms of narratives, performances, and technical work.

EditStock is a library of content whose diversity is meant to be viewed holistically. While we prefer projects to contain a cultural mix of cast and crew, we do not strictly require it when recruiting or selling films. For example, we view it as ethical to sell content with actors all (or mostly) from the same ethnicity (i.e. Slum Dog Millionaire). However, we would not build a library of projects with actors all from one ethnicity. Judge us on our library, not on any project in isolation.

Diversity means different things to people based on their cultural background and social perspective. EditStock serves a world-wide audience, and we try not to view diversity through a particular national lens. That said, we are a company of people in the United states and our customers are mostly from English speaking countries. For that reason, we mostly cary English language projects, and get submitted many projects from within the cultures to which we sell content. It would not be good practice for us to offer films in languages we cannot support to customers we don't have for the sake of diversity. We do offer films with some foreign languages, which we offer with English translations burned into the video.

The American perspective on skin color is not the only example we look to when deciding what diversity of skin color means to our library. For example, we offer projects with dark-skin actors from France, the Middle East, Africa alongside African Americans. Similarly, we offer a diverse range of light-skin stories. A story about six-year-old skateboarders is diverse when compared to a story about a baker from Ireland, or a elderly couple in New Zealand, even if the characters have similar skin color.

Diversity means more than skin color. We offer projects about people who are handicapped, speak different languages, live different life styles, honor different spiritualities, are from a mix of genders, and harbor political and cultural beliefs.

Diverse of Narratives

We value collecting a diverse mix of stories. Core to our beliefs as a company, we feel that every country and community should share their story through video if they so choose.

We consider stories diverse if we don't have similar storylines within our library. We respect the storytelling of the project's creator. To some, a project might be offensive if it touches on cultural cliches or stereotypes. However, EditStock will publish those stories if the creators match the cultural narrative presented and they are doing so with an honest intent. We generally do not publish cross-cultural stories unless the creators took efforts to represent the culture they are portraying accurately and with dignity. When we doubt the narrative's intent, we ask the creators.

Diverse of Crew

We consider crews diverse if the creator of the story comes from a cultural group we don't have many examples of in our library. By crew, we mostly mean actors, directors, and writers. We do not collect data on other workers from the film sets of the projects we offer.

Our Audience

We aim to serve our customers, wherever they are, with the type of content for which they are seeking in the classroom.

As we mentioned earlier, EditStock's audience is primarily made up of English language film schools and their students, many who are between the ages of 16-30. Because we work with many schools and students with a wide perspective on what is acceptable content for the classroom, we are more conservative about the stories we publish than what young students can see at in movie theaters. We add an R rating to any film that contains adult storylines. We do not distribute videos with any nudity at all. We do distribute films with swearing. We do not distribute overly violent films, though fighting and some violence is a part of many films and film culture in general.

We offer tools to help you find the diversity you're looking for through filters on our film collection page.
